June 16, 2022 (Ames, IA) - Earlier this week, the Ames Chamber of Commerce and Des Moines Area Community College hosted "Teaching for the Workforce", a two-day workshop for teachers within Story and Boone County. Teaching for the Workforce gave educators the chance to hear presentations and tour local businesses to better understand our regional economy and workforce priorities. Educators were able to take away practical tools and strategies for implementing career awareness, exploration, and workplace learning activities for their classrooms. "It was exciting to welcome 20 teachers from middle school and high school for our two-day workforce program. Teachers enjoyed taking tours, asking questions, and exploring different skills that are used in the workforce today", said Nikki Fischer, Director of Workforce Development & Diversity at the Ames Chamber of Commerce. "Alongside Des Moines Area Community College and their work-based learning experience and tool kits, we enjoyed being able to help connect teachers with key businesses in our community". The class met at the Ames Chamber of Commerce and took tours to several businesses throughout Story County. Businesses who participated by providing tours include ALMACO, Todd & Sargent, Inc, Story County Medical Center, Burke Corporation, and Alliant Energy. After completing the workshop, educators will receive one license renewal credit through Heartland AEA, if desired.
